Philippines: Ecosystems Improved for Sustainable Fisheries (ECOFISH) Program

June 2012–June 2017 The fisheries sector is enormously important to the economy of the Philippines, particularly to the poorer and more marginalized citizens whose livelihoods depend on small-scale fisheries. However, excessive and unsustainable fishing, population growth, uncontrolled development, limited private sector investment, and inconsistent policies and programs for sustainable fisheries have resulted in the decrease in average sizes of fishes, shifts in species composition, and a steep decline in abundance of valuable species.
